Soundpost

Though not immediately visible from the outside of the intrument, soundposts play a large role in determining an instrument´s tone. The soundposts made by the Tempel company are of hazel spruce, felled in the Grosswalser valley of Austria. Every soundpost is split by hand along the natural grain of the wood. This method is the only way of preserving the natural stiffness of the wood, which is critical to giving celli and basses their proper resonance.

The soundposts are turned solely by hand. Craftsmen cut them to the exact dimensions dictated by the size of the stringed instrument. This precision allows optimal resonance through the body of the instrument and also allows the excellent tonal properties of the wood to come to the fore.
